Pirates prospect Gerrit Cole, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2011 Draft, gave up three runs on three hits over 2 1/3 innings in his professional debut for Mesa. He walked one and struck out two, reaching 100 mph with his fastball. Rays prospect Tim Beckham was 4-for-5 with two triples, two doubles, four RBIs and three runs scored for Surprise, while Matt Dominguez, the Marlins' top prospect, collected three hits, including a solo homer, and two RBIs. Tigers prospect Rob Brantly was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs and David Nick (D-backs) also had a pair of hits to raise his average to .417 as the first-place Rafters won their third consecutive game. Minor League RBI leader Nolan Arenado (Rockies) singled in the tying run in a four-run seventh inning and Ryan Wheeler (D-backs) put Salt River in front with another RBI base hit.
